Mexican American Studies in Tucson- a story of self determination

Arizona is no stranger to the national political spotlight, and 2010 was no different.  Arizona’s bill, HB 2281, banned ethnic studies in what would become a local political battle with Mexican-American Studies in public schools at the epicenter. This battle was the precursor to the Critical Race Theory issue we see across many school boards throughout the nation. This panel will discuss the history of TUSD’s Mexican American Studies and the aftermath. Wednesday, April 24, 4pm - Free Online Zoom Panel.  Register here »  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Wjc5lnTTRcyhMF8LvYPUnw

Opening Night Celebration

Opening Night was a remarkable evening of Native American music, film and culture at the outdoor Mercado venue. Honorary Chair Jon Santaanta Proudstar was on hand to sign his Tribal Force comic book while award-winning Tony Redhouse entranced the audience with an incredible native flute performance. Crowning the night was the film premiere of Cafe Daughter by Mohawk filmmaker, Shelley Niro.  Based on real events, a mother hides her children's Cree identity to save them from the fate of their suppressed indigenous ancestry and give them a better life.
