The work of gifted soul singer-songwriter-guitarist Eddie Hinton’s has seemingly slipped through the cracks of music history. While Hinton’s gravelly voice and searing lyrics made him a revered artist, his untimely death made him a legend. This striking documentary reveals the harsh life and emotionally illuminating music of this inimitable southern soulman.
The film weaves a dramatic story about Hinton’s eclectic career, using archival footage and interviews with notable musicians Jerry Wexler, Donnie Fritts, Dick Cooper, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson and Bill Blackburn, among others. The sparse shots in which Hinton appears reveal a troubled, erratic man with soul-stirring talent.
The documentary is peppered with Hinton’s original music—a meager catalogue when compared with his more than 200 collaborative albums. Indeed, his work with Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, Boz Scaggs, Otis Redding, Little Richard, Percy Sledge, Tom Jones, and Dusty Springfield remains breathtaking to this day.
