The Lines In Between

Julia Discenza
United States, 2023, 11 min.

In English.

Struggling with writer's block, a woman moves through surreal worlds to discover the ebbs and flows of creativity.

Director's Statement

My initial jumping off point for The Lines In Between was the poem "Dolly" by Paul Rabinowitz which narrates the film's second section. I was drawn to the poem's rhythm, surrealism and intertwined characters, and was reminded of the importance of play as part of the creative process. I wanted to make a film that was fun and frivolous in contrast to my previous work. The structure of the film expanded to incorporate three more of Paul's poems, each with its own pace, tone and texture, which framed this scene and began to reflect a wider spectrum and greater depth of my personal artistic journey. The film has revealed itself as a musing on the relationship we build with our internal creative space and its external presentation. As a performer, the line between the two is very thin. I wanted to explore the ways we greet, grow into and nurture this through movement and setting. My hope is that our audience are left feeling at ease with the illusiveness of creativity, and that the lessons of nature's rhythms shine through this film.
