The Immaculate Misconception

Michael Geoghegan
United Kingdom, 2015, 25 min.

In English.
This film is family friendly.

Belief, family and honour. Sinead O'Reilly is a pregnant 16-year-old living with her grandparents Daniel and Bronagh O'Reilly. Bronagh is the matriarch of this family and a devout, pious, dour Catholic to boot, who will stop at nothing to maintain her standing in a community that doesn't want her. Sinead's pregnancy is both the last straw and unbeknownst to Bronagh, her salvation as she is thrown a lifeline by their GP who informs Bronagh that "although pregnant, Sinead is still a virgin". If Bronagh can get the birth proclaimed immaculate by the Vatican then God only knows what is possible.

Director's Statement

This is a very personal film, on the surface it seems quiet superficial, but the characters and institutions are based on my formative years. I wanted to imbue the characters with traits that reflected some of my experiences in care but I also wanted the audience to laugh, to feel empathy. I wanted them to make assumptions and judgments and then as the narrative twists to think again and maybe to reflect. The bible stories of the virgin birth and the conception of Mary really stuck with me and then I wondered what would transpire if they happened today, somewhere ordinary to ordinary people.
