Mariah ¡que baile!

Anita Abbasi
Martin Baena
Canada, 2017, 13 min.

In English.
Includes adult language.

Mariah, a scatterbrained teenager and aspiring ballet dancer, guns for a coveted audition. She enlists the help of her trenchant dance instructor; but as the demands to ensure a dance career consume her life, her two best friends begin to distance themselves from her. The film looks at some of the nuances of growing up Latinx in Canada and the choices faced in a world that is both familiar and foreign.

Director's Statement

As first-generation Canadians, raised in immigrant households, it was important for us to make a film that reflected our experiences without lionizing or trivializing them. In crafting a coming-of-age narrative, we wanted to avoid the usual pitfalls of showing an extraordinary character misunderstood by her peers; instead, choosing to highlight these characters’ opposing viewpoints and desires without disparaging them. The conflict between Mariah and her peers is typical of early adulthood: friends drift apart as they explore their respective interests and differentiate themselves as individuals. That Mariah feels the need to bridge this gap is completely understandable, if ultimately impossible.
