Haus des Meeres

Kristine Morgan
United States, 2018, 2 min.

When a girl sits for a simple portrait in front of a white wall, flowers begin to appear, adorning her in an idyllic scene, but it takes a turn when she begins to throw up the flowers, one by one, and once they are all gone, she continues to vomit everything inside of her that is destroying her. Once she is left with nothing, then she can rebuild.

Director's Statement

Haus des Meeres is an aquarium in an old World War II tower in Vienna. It has been used as a hotel/youth hostel, fire station, and finally an aquarium. In 1991, American artist Lawrence Weiner designed a piece atop the building as a memorial against war and fascism. The piece reads: Smashed to Pieces (In The Still of The Night), in English and German. The preservation of the art remains a priority today, and the aquarium is one of Austria's most popular attractions. This film, conceived in 2016, chronicles a similar trajectory of creation, destruction, and, hopefully, rebirth.
