The Outer Circle
Adam Baroukh
United Kingdom, 2017, 13 min.
In English, Arabic with English subtitles.
This film is family friendly.
Midway through a gruelling Orthodox conversion, Daniel and his fiancée Katherine are eager to gain the blessing of his intimidatingly large and loud Iraqi Jewish family. At their annual Rosh Hashanah feast, Katherine's natural elegance and English heritage immediately endears her to them, but it soon becomes apparent that beneath the warm and welcoming atmosphere, some are not ready as others to accept her.
Director's Statement
The Outer Circle shines a light on four generations of Iraqi Jews. Each generation is a snapshot of the integration process, and the family is full of contradictions. My work often features characters trying to break free from oppressive forces or struggling to express themselves in the world, and centres on the tension between individual and community. As the title suggests, this story about being on the inside and the outside at the same time, both for Daniel and Katherine in different ways, and the family as a whole within the UK. The culture is so specific, yet there's something very identifiable and relatable.
