Children of Agave

Ivan Lopez-Barba
Mexico, 2025, 22 min.

In Spanish with English subtitles.

In the agave fields of contemporary rural México, a new silhouette of masculinity takes shape. Work, fatherhood, and nature intertwine over the course of a workday with three men whose sensitivity and idiosyncrasies warmly depict the legendary craft of the jimador, challenging the stereotype of the Mexican macho. Through the hypnotic labor of agave harvesting and the shifting light of the day, we witness the threats looming over the artisanal work of these farmers, the deep respect these loving fathers have for their families, and the significance of freedom in reshaping the image of men in this society.

Director's Statement

As a filmmaker, I have the need and commitment to tell stories that allow the audience to discover realities that offer a new perspective or even a way out of societal issues. I seek specific stories that establish a critical dialogue based on human relationships and the universal values that govern them. Driven by this interest I began an investigation in 2021 about the agave, the mystical plant that protects its heart with sharp, thorn-filled leaves, and the Jimador, the farmer responsible for harvesting it with a tool that seems almost medieval, as sharp as it is dangerous: the Coa.
