Land of Canaan

Maggie Lemere
United States, 2025, 84 min.

AIFF Award Winner:
Best Documentary

As Palestinian life and land are threatened with systematic destruction, this documentary presents a rare and intimate view of Palestinian farmers and their ancient olive trees - symbols of resilience, heritage, and home. Faced with ongoing political violence and the loss of their land, a visionary olive farmer brings thousands of small-scale olive farmers together in fair trade cooperatives that connect them to global markets and create a future for their families, one that is life-affirming and nurtures their ancestral relationship to the land and the olive trees they serve.

Director's Statement

I am a documentary filmmaker rooted in human rights, environmental activism, and oral history, committed to collaborative storytelling that disrupts extractive narratives and centers dignity, agency, and connection. My work seeks regenerative stories that illuminate resilience, beauty, and possibility—especially in places too often defined by conflict. Land of Canaan reflects this commitment. In partnership with Palestinian olive farmers, I explore devotion to land, community, and ecological belonging. Rather than reproducing narratives of tragedy, the film foregrounds visionary leadership and collective care, while remaining grounded in the realities of occupation. I aim to create immersive, relational cinema that transforms how we see one another and the earth.
