Dive
Amy-Joyce Hastings
Ireland, 2025, 8 min.
In English.
This film is family friendly.
At a family gathering on the Irish coast, Jess slips away to an iconic diving tower high above the Atlantic. As the sea churns below, she confronts the weight of memory, the messy beauty of motherhood, and the personal courage required to move forward. Dive is a lyrical meditation on memory, resilience, and the moments that shape who we become.
Director's Statement
Dive is an adaptation of an award-winning short story of mine, published last year. It is a very personal reflection, as my own mother was in hospital at the time of writing. The challenge in adapting it was how to depict Jess’s internal thoughts and memories on screen to shape the narrative journey. I was lucky that Alison McGirr brought so much of that to the screen with her eyes, as well as her courage in tackling the physical demands of the role. The film also leans into lyrical voiceover, evocative music and sound design, and sweeping cinematography.
