Carlotta's Face

Valentin Riedl
Frédéric Schuld

In German with English subtitles.

AIFF Award Winner:
Special Jury Award for Innovative Filmmaking

As a child, Carlotta didn't expect the people around her to have faces. She even doesn't recognize her own face. Years later, she learns about a rare, untreatable deficit of her brain. It was art, after all, that offered her a way to finally recognize herself.

Director's Statement

In my scientific work, I aim to uncover the mysteries of human brain function. Carlotta has tremendously broadened my knowledge about this fascinating organ by highlighting the importance of personal, non-objectifiable perception. Any one of us has a different view of the world. With lots of passion, Frédéric Schuld has translated Carlotta's individual perception into drawings that were fully inspired by her lithographic self-portraits.

Category: Animation, Documentary, Award Winner.
Themes: Identity, World Cinema.
