Scheherazade Zero One

Madeleine Collier
United States, 2019, 13 min.

In French with English subtitles.
Includes adult language.

In this futuristic take on 1001 Nights, Scheherazade is a cyborg owned by Bruno, an up-and-coming young filmmaker. Bruno has been threatening to replace the worn-out Scheherazade with a newer model; when he discovers she has been making sophisticated found footage films of her own, she agrees to show him one film a night as a bargaining chip to avoid being discarded.

Director's Statement

Scheherazade is a singular character in the history of literature and folklore; in the original tale, she uses her creative gifts to put an end to the femicide threatening her kingdom. I wanted to take the opportunity of this re-imagining to think about questions of female authorship, as well as highlight the entities we might consider "marginally human" in the Age of Information.

Category: Science Fiction.
Themes: Technology, Identity, Filmmaking.
