This film is family friendly.
Meet Cuban musician Carlos Varela, singer-songwriter, lyricist, and one of the most influential and well-loved artists of his time. Uniquely influenced by his country, politics and people; a passionate voice in his struggle for individual freedoms, and his efforts to build bridges between Cuba, the United States, disenfranchised Cubans, and the people of the world. Filmed in Havana, with unique access, exclusive interviews, stunning concert footage and insider back-stage moments, Varela is joined by international stars: his friends, Jackson Browne, Benicio del Toro, Ivan Lins, Luis Enrique, Juan and Samuel Formel, Diana Fuentes, X Alfonso, Alexander Abreu and many more.
Director's Statement
While shooting my next film--arguably the most comprehensive look at the contemporary Cuban music scene ever documented-- I encountered Carlos Varela, and in him a friend; musician, lyricist and voice so singular and powerful, I was compelled to tell his story in a film all of its own. I was influenced early on by protest music and its themes, and so was fascinated to discover that in Cuba the inspiration for music to affect culture, change, and champion freedom and liberty, still pours from the heart and soul of Carlos Varela into every word and note he sings.
