The Other Side
Griselda San Martin
Spain, 2017, 6 min.
In Spanish with English subtitles.
The Other Side is the story of deported musician Jose Marquez and his daughter Susanna who have been separated for almost 15 years but meet every month on either side of the US-Mexico border wall.
Director's Statement
Every weekend at Friendship Park, dozens of people come to meet and greet one another on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border fence, an experience that many describe as being "bitter sweet". The park is the only bi-national meeting place along the 2,000-mile border dividing the United States and Mexico. The documentary examines these border interactions during a time of rising xenophobic political sentiment. My goal was to address the issue of the thousands of families who are suffering the tragedy of familial separation.
