An Older Man paints a birdhouse with care. “You’re gonna like it here.” A Latino family arrives at his AirBnb. It is filled with birdhouses. And as Juan and his sister play in and around the house, the boy becomes drawn to the whimsical birdhouses. But something is…off. He wakes in the night hearing the sound of his name and is led to a startling discovery.
Director's Statement
We have a lot to learn from children. They have a wonder, abandon, play, and presence that I personally strive for every day. Unfortunately that wonderment and openness can be the very thing that puts them in danger. When I first read this screenplay, I was immediately drawn to how the magical elements of this world infiltrate the psychology of the characters. This intimate film captures purity of how one young boy silences fear and leans into the adventure in front of him. A pied piper tale told today, Birdhouse explores the fine line between fear and bravery, and the price paid for curiosity.
