Empress ClawScream (https://empressclawscream.com/) is an offbeat LGBTQ+ fantasy rom-com where regional sci-fi conventions, 1980s cartoon crazes, Riot Grrrl feminism, and first love all collide in spectacular fashion. Set at a sci-fi convention in 1992, Empress ClawScream is a fable of fandoms and first loves that embraces the crazy drama and joy of adolescence, and the importance of always being true to yourself.
Director's Statement
As a non-binary and queer filmmaker, I wanted to tell an LGBTQ+ story with a twist, and one that doesn’t use coming out as gay as a central conflict. LGBTQ+ stories (and in particular lesbian and queer female stories) remain underrepresented on film, and with Empress ClawScream I am aiming to redress the gender balance with a coming-of-age story that’s truly unlike anything out there, and that holds a positive message for anyone struggling with their identity.
