Mikaela Bruce
United States, 2023, 9 min.
In English.
This film is family friendly.
After a long period of absence Olivia is eager to return to her high school basketball team. When unresolved emotions result in expulsion, she cannot ignore the painful memories beginning to resurface.
Director's Statement
In NOT AFRAID I am exploring and lamenting the emotional and psychological reality of a young woman facing loss and hopelessness as she is left behind to deal with the loss related to MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women). In opening up the world of Olivia through film we can bring light to this invisible crisis. As a non-native director, it was crucial that this film be a true collaboration with Indigenous artists and MMIW experts to bring a level of authenticity and representation to the project. Executive Producer Jen Murphy's collaboration was vital in filling this key role.
