Power

Jeanny Gering
Germany, 2015, 19 min.

In English.

The brutal gang rape of a young woman in Delhi shocked the world. Self-defense teacher Debi Steven traveled to India to show thousands of girls and women how to fight back if they're attacked. Debi is on a mission to end violence against women and to protect others from what she had to experience. POWER follows her through India and asks: what has changed since the Delhi gang rape in 2012?

Director's Statement

POWER is my first independent documentary and I poured my heart into. Because I believe, that this story allows us to deal with the harrowing issue of sexual violence, without losing hope. It doesn't make us helpless or scared. Debi Steven and every girl and woman you see in the film prove that things can change. Through the self-defense workshops I experienced the transformation of girls and women, who had learned to be submissive, into someone ready to fight back, to stand their ground, a force to be reckoned with.
